Stop by the Stonewall Gallery at Yarmouth History Center this summer to see local artist Thom Buescher’s prismatic and meditative Maine-inspired land and seascapes. The exhibit, Obdurate, features works in acrylic gouache that capture the colors, contours, and forces that shape the landscape around us.
In choosing the name for the show, Buescher writes, “Obdurate is a rich word that describes better than any other the granite born islands of Maine. Obdurate: obstinate, resistant, unyielding, hardened.” The works that make up the show exemplify this quality and “echo the common themes of granite and the sea: the classic irresistible force meeting the immovable object.” Since moving to Maine more than 30 years ago, Buescher has travelled to all of Maine’s year-round islands and day-tripped to countless others, experiences that he has honed into the meticulously considered landscapes of the show that reveal the layers and relationships of Maine’s landscapes. This exhibition is the first time that many of these works have been gathered into a single setting.
Obdurate will be on view at the Stonewall Gallery through September 10. The Gallery is located inside the Yarmouth History Center at 118 East Elm Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.
