The Yarmouth History Center is thrilled to announce the acquisition of two historic eighteenth-century Yarmouth Bibles. One belonged to the Reverend Ammi Ruhammah Cutter, who became the first minister of the Meetinghouse Under the Ledge in November of 1730. The Bible itself was published by John Baskett in England in 1727. It was given to Kate Stanwood Cutter Pillsbury Curtis by First Parish in 1930 and has recently been donated to the Yarmouth Historical Society by Alice and Brandon Martin of Petersburg, Virginia. This remarkable volume measures 17″ x 12″ and weighs about 14 pounds!
The second new arrival is the Drinkwater Family Bible, which dates to 1789. It contains handwritten inscriptions detailing members of the Drinkwater family and has been carefully hand-bound in leather. It was donated to the Historical Society by Carolyn Rees Stefani and her brother, Dr. Peter O. Rees.
The staff at the History Center is pleased to see these two significant objects come home to Yarmouth. Keep an eye out for the Bibles in future exhibits.
