Patrick Burrowes, PhD, presented a talk entitled “John Brown Russwurm (1799-1851): The Maine Roots of a Black Icon.” Learn more about Russwurm, a one-time Yarmouth resident with strong connections to the town, and his early life and education along with his work as a newspaper publisher and Agent/Governor of Maryland State Colony in Africa (later annexed by Liberia in 1857).
Carl Patrick Burrowes, PhD, is a retired humanities professor and university administrator who has published extensively on the history of the Black press and antebellum Black emigration to Liberia. In 1995 to 1998, he was the Carter G. Woodson Distinguished Professor at Marshall University. His research has received awards from the International Communication Association and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. He holds a PhD in Communications from Temple University.
