Stop by the Stonewall Gallery this winter to see our latest exhibit, Deconstructing Venus, featuring the richly layered collages and mixed media paintings of Bridgton artist Maya Kuvaja. The show opens on Friday, January 14 and runs through March 4.
Maya Kuvaja utilizes found discarded paper ephemera, maps, and vintage book pages to create her works, blending drawing, painting, and collage to create new narratives. For Deconstructing Venus, she reinterprets classical female figures from the art historical canon, removing them from their original context and placing them within a new collage of text and image. Of her work, Kuvaja writes, “These are images of women, painted by male artists, that in part inspired my early interest in art. Here they are singular and beautiful in their own worlds. Given their own voice, they are recontextualized self portraits.” The work for this exhibit was funded in part by the Maine Arts Commission.
The Stonewall Gallery is located within the Yarmouth History Center at 118 East Elm Street in Yarmouth and is open Tuesday through Friday, from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.
