Yarmouth History Center welcomes Curtis H. Martin to the Spring Lecture Series at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 24. Martin will speak about the American whaling industry from the 17th into the early 20th century. His talk will cover the development of the industry through time and its economic importance as well as the risks associated with whaling. Martin will also discuss whale ships and crews, life on board, and the leisure arts of whale men.
Martin is a resident of Wellesley, Massachusetts and is Professor Emeritus at Merrimack College. He earned a B.A. at Harvard College and a Ph.D. from the Tufts Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. He taught International Relations at Merrimack College from 1974 to 2012 and then began lecturing on American whaling in 2013.
This lecture is free for members of Yarmouth Historical Society and $5 for all others. The lecture series is sponsored by the Leon and Lisa Gorman Fund.
