Stop in during May and June to see the Stonewall Gallery’s early summer show, Portland Street Photography, by Yarmouth photographer Chris Wriggins. The exhibit showcases Wriggins’ eye for the moments of joy, unexpected juxtapositions, and compelling compositions he has encountered during his wanders through Portland. Of his photography practice, Wriggins writes:
Street photography… seeks to capture images of everyday life that have a transcendent quality. As expressed by the original master of the art, Henri Cartier-Bresson, it demands of the photographer to be “halfway between a pickpocket and a tightrope walker” by exercising both boldness and sensitivity. In my own work, I try to shoot unobtrusively and intuitively, to keep a fresh eye and remain alert to surprises as well as images that take time to compose carefully.
Chris Wriggins majored in photography at Bennington College and the San Francisco Art Institute and pursued further study with Eugene Smith at the International Center of Photography in New York. He took many extended hiking trips, photographing with film in remote mountain areas of Nepal, India, Afghanistan, and Tibet, before settling in Maine with his family. After a career as an architect, he is now retired and has returned to experience the new world of digital black and white fine art photography.
Portland Street Photography will be on view at the Yarmouth History Center, 118 East Elm Street in Yarmouth, Maine, through June 28, 2025. Our hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00-4:00.
