Tuesday, June 19 at 7:00 pm ~ Yarmouth History Center welcomes author Anne B. Gass to the Spring Lecture Series at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, June 19. In a talk titled “Patriotism, War, and Woman Suffrage,” Gass will discuss her extensive research into the suffrage movement during the early 20th century, focusing on the efforts of her great grandmother, Florence Brooks Whitehouse. Whitehouse was a leader in the Maine suffrage movement whose contributions were nearly forgotten until Gass worked to reveal them through archival research and family history.
Anne B. Gass is the author of the 2014 book Voting Down the Rose: Florence Brooks Whitehouse and Maine’s Fight for Woman Suffrage. She has lectured extensively about women’s suffrage throughout Maine and the region. Currently, Gass is working with other volunteers to help the Maine State Museum develop an exhibit to honor the 100-year anniversary of Maine’s ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. She is also the Maine coordinator for the national Votes for Women Trail, a project of the National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites.
This lecture is free for members of Yarmouth Historical Society and $5 for all others. The lecture series is sponsored by the Leon and Lisa Gorman Fund.
