Yarmouth Historical Society is proud to announce the winner of the 2020 Wellcome Prize for Student Historians. This year’s winner is Lane Sillin of Yarmouth, who won first prize for their paper about the life and times of Elsie Wellcome, the woman for whom the prize is named. Sillin presented their findings at a public talk via Zoom on November 17, 2020. A recording of the talk is available here and linked below.
Lane Sillin is a senior at North Yarmouth Academy and is a resident of Yarmouth. In their spare time, Lane enjoys journaling, reading, and painting, as well as spending time outside and with friends. They are very excited to get the opportunity to learn more about the history of their hometown and teach others about it as well.
The Wellcome Prize is Yarmouth History Center’s history writing competition open to high school students in Maine. Students are invited to undertake original historical research about a local history topic related to Cumberland County and write a research paper about their findings. Papers are judged on the quality of writing and research and winners are invited to present their findings to the public as part of the History Center’s fall lecture series.
